At the UCC in Bloomington, we focus on the intimate relationship between the top two bones in the neck, called the upper cervical spine, and more importantly, the brain stem. In order to grasp the concept of Upper Cervical care, one must first understand how the structure of the human body is created, how it is designed to function, and how it is supposed to operate in order to remain healthy.
The Brain Stem
The brain stem controls many vital functions of the human body and acts as a channel between the brain and the body. The function of the brain stem is very similar to a telephone cable. Just as a phone cable consists of many cords to transmit a timely message, so too the brain stem consists of an estimated 10-14 trillion individual wires, or nerve fibers, that send signals back and forth between the brain to virtually every system, organ, muscle and cell within the body.
The brain stem plays an important role in the regulation of cardiac and respiratory function. It regulates the central nervous system, and is pivotal in maintaining consciousness and regulating the sleep cycle. The brainstem has many basic functions including heart rate, breathing, sleeping, and eating.
The Spine & The Rest of the Body
Every bone in the human spine, from the 3rd cervical vertebra all the way down to the bottom, has an intervertebral disc above and below that vertebra and four inter locking joints (two above and two below) that limit spinal motion and can help prevent traumatic misalignment. By contrast, the top bone in the neck, the atlas (aka C1), is the only vertebra in the entire spine that does not have an intervertebral disc nor interlocking bones (above or below). Furthermore, the axis (aka C2) does not have a disc nor interlocking joints above, but in contrast does have a disc below along with interlocking joints. These two transitional segments are designed to have considerably more range of motion than any other vertebrae. The head and the neck are the proverbial bowling ball on broom stick, and where they meet is a metaphor for this upper cervical area. As a result, the top two more freely moveable bones are much more susceptible to traumatic misalignment.
Misalignment & Subluxation
When the first two bones in the neck, atlas/C1 and Axis/C2 are misaligned, the brain stem may become irritated, resulting in reduced brain-to-body communication. When this line of communication is altered, messages sent from the brain stem to the rest of the body may not process properly, causing the body’s function to become impaired.
Furthermore, if either of the top two bones become misaligned, the rest of the body must compensate or adapt, resulting in total body imbalance. This imbalance affects the structure of the human body and thus compromises the health of an individual. When this happens, the condition is called a vertebral subluxation.
